How To Do Hand Lettering

How To DoOn my last post a lot of you guys asked me if I could give some tips on hand lettering. I am still trying to learn it but I love to share with you how I got started and give you some tips as well as tell you what supplies I use.

Supplies

You don’t need any expensive supplies to get started. All you need is a pencil and some paper. Maybe a ruler too. Fine liners a great too. I have the whole collection of Stabilos fine liners but I don’t use them as much for lettering as I use them in school. What I did buy were some brush pens. The first once I had were from ShinHanart, but they always color through two pages. The second ones were  from Farber Castell. Last week I bought some dual brush pens from Tombow and I have to say they are better for lettering than the Farber Castell ones.

How to get started

In the beginning I just tried to write words in different Fonds but what really got me into lettering were Pinterest and YouTube.

Before I started doing it myself I created a board on Pinterest on lettering where I still pinn a lot of things on. It took me months to finally try it myself rather than just stare at the pretty pictures.

I also have a board where I collect quotes I like, so I never run out of ideas.

The videos that helped me the most are by a blogger called Shayda Campbell. You can find her channel here.

Tips

The best tip I can give you is to practice. It took me a year to get my hand lettering to look good. In the beginning look up some pictures you like and try to do them yourself. For me that was the best way to learn. Don’t get upset if it doesn’t  look as pretty as you want it to be. Sometimes it takes me a lot of tries to finally get one pretty piece. When I got my first brush pen I destroyed it the day I got it because I was so upset that my writing  didn’t look the way I wanted it to look.

I hope this helps you a litte bit. Maybe I will post about my creative journal soon. I do post a lot of my lettering over on Instagram. make sure to follow me there.

If you have any questions just ask me.

  1. I have been trying to delve into the hand lettering relm for about a year now and it’s so much fun. I find it so hard to avoid reverting back to my defalt messy hand lettering that I had been perfecting for years but Shayda and Pinterest have helped me as well. I love all of the lettering pieces you have up on instagram.

I’ve been wanting to try it lately, but I really don’t know where to start. I also want to buy a brush pen so badly, but I don’t know where to get one! Can you please help? xx

  3. I have always wanted to get into hand lettering, but I am rubbish and just can’t seem to keep the fonts all the same and in equal proportion! 🙂
